New Jersey 1793 militia enrollment
The following was taken from the microfilmed handwritten transcribed registers of the militia enrollment for Burlington, Camden, Essex, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Sussex counties as found in the Joint Free Public Library of Morristown and Morris Twp.
On November 30, 1792, a law was passed in the New Jersey State Legislature which was aimed at the reorganization of the New Jersey State Militia. One of the first requirements of the law was to have a statewide census taken of all eligible males between the ages of 18 and 45. The census was to determine manpower potential and to organize those listed into militia bodies. Exception being made to certain persons who have done Revolutionary War service or others previously enrolled in a state militia; these exemptions are often listed and herein enumerated. Exemption was also made by payment of a $3.00 yearly fee.
[Assuming that no one was younger than 18 or older than 45, then everyone would have been born between 1748 and 1775.]

From Roy Sheldon:
Thomas SHELDON
birth & death dates from Hardin Co. Cemetery Records
War of 1812 destroyed many NJ records so he has not been able
to be traced back further. Some say he came to OH with a brother, (an
early census implies one in the enumeration), but no Sheldon brother
has been found. There is a Thomas Sheldon listed in the 1793 NJ
militia of Roxbury, Morris Co. (http://www.rootsweb.com/~njmorris/military/militia/militia-d.htm by rick Is he the father of Thomas Sheldon, born 1789?
Or perhaps he was adopted, an orphan, etc. We don't know Thomas's
origins. The name Putnam was used as a middle name for two of his
children, Wm. Putnam & Isaac Putnam. Perhaps his mother was a Putnam,
or married one, and he came to OH with a brother named Putnam. Rufus
Putnam was a famous figure in OH history at the time, so that could
account for the name, rather than a familial association. However, an
I. Putnam did own land in Tiverton Twn., Coshocton Co. in 1872,
according to an atlas of that date. Dr. Isaac Putnam (1824-1873) lived
in Holmes and/or Coshocton Co., OH. His wife was Sarah Cunningham (d.
1878) and they had at least two children: David E. (1857-1885) &
Robert, an MD (1852-1933). I believe there is a connection with the
Sheldon family. Thomas Sheldon (1789-1871) named a son born in 1855
Isaac Putnam Sheldon. William Sheldon, one of Thomas's grown sons, a
year later, named his newborn son William Putnam Sheldon (1856-1939).
I'm not too sure how often people named their children after the
doctor who delivered them, but there may be a closer family tie. There
was a Wm. Putnam listed as living in Hanover Twp in the 1788 Census
Index of Morris Co., NJ. The Tharps were from Morris Co., NJ. Perhaps
Thomas's parents were from there too. From the Hardin Co., IA history
(1911) entry on son TJ Sheldon: "His parents were Thomas J. and Huldah
(Thorpe) Sheldon, both natives of New Jersey, where they were married.
They settled in Ohio before the war of 1812, and the father entered
the service from that state. They cleared up a timber farm in the
wilderness. About 1831 they moved to Holmes county and opened up
another timber farm and lived on it about eighteen years"
(http://www.rootsweb.com/~iabiog/hardin/pp1911/pp1911_s.htm #Thomas
Jefferson Sheldon). Pat Hunt has Huldah as a witness to a transfer
from Asher to Moses Tharp on 28 Sep 1809 in Musk. Co. Wilmer Bechtel,
Pat Hunt, & Chris Rumbaugh have done extensive work on the Sheldon
lines. I am indebted to them for information, especially Wilmer's
"Sheldon Family Tree" & Pat's charts.
