    • http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Hamilton/HamiltonChapIII.htm refers to Abel Cook Brother of Lydia?

"The Henckel Genealogy has Lydia Cook as being of LancasterCounty, Pennsylvania and all of her children with Joseph Hinkle beingborn in Lancaster County. It also has a brother, Abel Cook, being with her and husband Joseph in Ohio and being killed there by Indians with husband Joseph. Based on assumption that Abel Cook was a brother,it names her father as Abel Cook, Sr. Furthur research of The HenckelGenealogy does not reveal another Joseph Hinkle who could have married Lydia Cook. The Joseph Hinkle designated in this family history served in the Revolutionary War in 1781 and 1782.

There was a Cook family of East Donegal Township, Lancaster County,Pennsylvania. They were Scotch-Irish and members of the Donegal PresbyterianChurch. Records of that family in the time period do not show a child Lydia.
This researcher Robert Raup believes the Henckle Genealogy to be in error.

Bob Raup email 7/1/2005 - Lydia Cook

Note: Hi Terry... you are also a descendant of Joseph Hinkle and Lydia Cook. I descend through their son Asa...I have been doing considerable research on both of them. First, Lydia Cook. My research indicates that she is not from Lancaster, PA and daughter of Able Cook, Sr.Rather, she is from Morris County, New Jersey, and probably the daughter of Asa Cook and Lusannah Bryant. Asa is a fifth generation descendant of the Mayflower Francis Cook. I believe she is probably the sister of Ziba Cook who married in Washington Co., PA his cousin Jemimah Cook, daughter of Jacob Cook, brother of Asa. A son of Jacob, Able Cook, was killed with Joseph Hinkle in Ohio. Asa Cook died in Morris Co., PA in early 1777 and did not leave a will. He had a documented son Solomon and a "possible" son Stephen according to Mayflower records. It is certainly most probable that he had other children. The fact that the first two children of Joseph Hinkle and Lydia Cook are named Asa and Ziba are good reasons to put Lydia with this family....One other source I have found is the Goshen Baptist Church Records - 1797, Greene Twp, Washington Co., PA - became part of Greene County. Both Joseph and Lydia are in records. Joseph's last record is dated Nov 24, 1789 and Lydia, along with Abraham Covalt and wife are given letters of dismission on Nov 28, 1789.
There's certainly a lot more research to do in New Jersey and hopefully more records can be found but I think the above is a good start. We were just in Washington Co, PA and I think I found at the library and court house all available records from that locality. I didn't get to Greene Co. but since it was part of Washington for period concerned I don't think any additional records would be found. In Washington Co. even though Joseph Hinkle's tax records showed him paying tax on land, there was no deed records shown for him at the courthouse. Court house personnel said that was not unusual for that early period of time.
